Eligibility & Rules
- The OCA BEST essay contest is open to any individual currently enrolled in the BEST program.
- The essay contest will be formatted into 4 age divisions, according to age divisions for showmanship participation: Beginner (10 and under), Junior (11-13), Intermediate (14-16) and Senior (17 and older) as of January 1, 2010.
- Essays submitted in the beginner division may be hand-written and should be no more than 500 words. Essays for junior, intermediate and senior divisions must be typed, double spaced, with 1-inch margins and be no more than 1,000 words. There is no minimum word count for any age division. Contestants should answer the questions completely and to the best of their ability without exceeding the maximum word count.
- Consideration will be given for neatness of materials, spelling, grammar and punctuation, as well as documentation when other sources are utilized.
- There will only be one topic for all age divisions but the entries will judged within the age divisions.
- Intermediate and Senior division essays must city as least two references and include bibliography entries, which will not be included in the word count.
- Each essay submitted should include a cover page with the following information: name of exhibitor, birth date, and age division. Please do not include your name or other reference to yourself on any remaining pages. The essays will be submitted to judges without the cover sheets to ensure anonymity and fairness in the scoring procedure.
- The essays must be submitted to the Ohio Cattlemen's Association office and be postmarked no later than May 1, 2010.
- Awards for the essay contest will be presented at the 2010 BEST awards banquet.
