Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Celebrates Another Successful Year

    More that 300 beef producers gathered at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café, Columbus, on January 19, 2008, for the annual meeting and awards banquet of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA). The annual event featured policy development sessions, OCA annual meeting and OCA awards.

    OCA’s membership committee reported that membership renewals in the association are up and that membership in OCA’s Allied Industry Council has experienced significant gains. The Beef Improvement Committee gave an update on the Ohio Heifer Development Program, Seedstock Improvement Sales, Ohio’s Professional Beef Producer Program and the Ohio Beef Expo.

    Steve Foglesong, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Policy Division Chairman from Illinois, gave an update on NCBA activities as well as discussed many of the issues NCBA is working on for the beef industry.

    OCA board member, Bruce Burgett, Carroll County, coordinated the policy development portion of the OCA Annual Meeting. These resolutions covered such topics as cattle health, live cattle marketing, property rights and environmental management, tax and credit, and beef checkoff improvements.

    OCA’s Membership Committee also recognized the members of OCA’s Top Hand Recruiting Club. Land O’Lakes Feed and Quality Liquid Feed sponsored the awards.

    OCA members and guests reconvened at 6:00 p.m. in the banquet room of the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café to help celebrate another successful year and to recognize the Ohio beef industry’s best and brightest.

    An early highlight of the banquet included the crowning of Emily Brinkman of Henry County as the 2008 Ohio Beef Queen. Rounding out Brinkman’s court will be first runner-up, Kayla Shipley of Adams County, and second runner-up, Megan DeBruin of Fairfield County.

    Ten scholarships were presented to outstanding youth during the awards banquet. Steve R. Rauch Benchmark of Excellence scholarship recipients included: Lisa Marie Buehler, Shelby County; Nicholas Leeper, Union County; and Christina Enger, Richland County. Allison Agle, Clark County; Natalie Miller, Richland County; and Justin Spengler, Monroe County; were awarded $1,000 Tagged for Greatness Scholarships, which are funded with the sales of the Ohio Beef license plate. Kystin Bachman, Fairfield County; and Daniel Ulry, Licking County; received a $1,000 Country Club Scholarship, which was funded by the putt putt course at the 2007 Ohio State Fair. The Ohio CattleWomen’s Association awarded scholarships to Christina Egner, Richland County; and Lindsey Kay Regula, Auglaize County. 

    OCA also recognized county associations that incorporate new or creative activities to build stronger relationships with the state group, to promote beef, or to emphasize youth community involvement. Fairfield County was announced as the top affiliate for 2007 and received a $500 check. Highland County was the second place affiliate and received a $300 check and Crawford County was announced as the third place affiliate and received a $200 check. Crawford County was also recognized earlier in the day for being OCA’s Helper of the Year in 2007.

    The special evening for beef producers continued with awards being presented to OCA Young Cattleman of the Year, Chad McDowell of Adams County; OCA Industry Service Award winners Representative Tony Core and Senator Larry Mumper; and OCA Industry Excellence Award recipient Bill Sexten of Fayette County.

Corcoran Farms of Pike County received the Commercial Cattleman of the Year Award while Carroll County’s Burgett Angus Farm was awarded the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award.

    Awards in these categories were sponsored by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association with ABN Radio Network/ Buckeye Ag Radio Network, Ohio’s Country Journal, Farm World and Farm and Dairy.

    The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is an affiliate of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and is the state’s spokesperson and issues manager for all segments of the beef cattle industry including cattle breeders, producers and feeders.  It is the grass roots policy development organization for the beef business.  Through the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, cattle producers work to create a positive business environment, while providing consumers with a safe and wholesome product.

Crawford County - 3rd Place Outstanding County Affiliate
The Crawford County Cattlemen’s Association was recognized by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association as the third place Outstanding County Affiliate for 2007 and were presented with a $200 check for use in their county.
