The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is hosting two Seedstock Improvement Bull Sales scheduled for April. The sales, scheduled for Friday, April 3 at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville and Saturday, April 18 at Union Stock Yards Company in Hillsboro, offer an affordable way to buy bulls from multiple breeds in one location and on one day. Buyers have the assurance of buying bulls with known genetics, a completed vaccination regiment and a breeding soundness exam. This year there are 38 bulls consigned to the sale at Muskingum and 32 to the sale at Union Stock Yards.
Catalogs are now available for both sales. The bulls in both sales range in age from one to four years and are all registered and have expected progeny differences. The bulls are placed in sale order based on a within breed evaluation star system using EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and milk. Many of the proven bulls available will have additional performance based information including offspring data. Breeds represented are Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Red Angus, Shorthorn, SimAngus and Simmental.

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association invites you to participate in the 2009 Seedstock Improvement Sales scheduled for Friday night, April 3, at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville, Ohio and on Saturday afternoon, April 18, at the Union Stock Yards in Hillsboro, Ohio. The Seedstock Improvement Sale is open to consignments from all members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and all breeds of bulls.
This opportunity offers an affordable way to market bulls in a sale that features elite animals from multiple breeds in one location and on one day. Buyers have the assurance of buying bulls with known genetics, completed vaccination regiment, and that have passed a breeding soundness exam. Many of the bulls you consign will qualify for Genetic Improvement cost share dollars from the Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation. Bulls are required to have to have Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). They will be placed in sale order based on a within breed evaluation system using EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and milk. Bulls can be one to five years of age. History of the sales indicates that bulls 18 months and older command a higher sale price. Each bull must also pass a Breeding Soundness Exam prior to the sale, have proper health documentation, and completed a required set of vaccinations.
The enclosed documents detail the consignment requirements, vaccination form, and consignment form. The vaccination form needs to accompany the bulls to the sales. OCA 2008 SIS Sale at Muskingum Livestock Results
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association recently held the first of two Seedstock Improvement Bull Sales on April 4 at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville, Ohio. Twenty-seven high quality bulls ranging from one to five years of age went through the sale ring. The high selling lot was 13, consigned by Dave White of White’s Skyline Charolais and sold for $2,250 to Leo Muncy of Preston, W Va. This mature Charolais bull, born 4/2/2003 was sired by TLT Rio Blanco 1234P. Eight breeds of cattle were represented in the sale. Bulls sold into Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

OCA 2008 SIS Sale at Union Stock Yards Results
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association recently held the second Seedstock Improvement Bull Sale for 2008 on April 12 at Union Stock Yards in Hillsboro, Ohio. Sixty-eight high quality bulls ranging from one to five years of age went through the sale ring. The high selling lot was 12, consigned by David Long of Kiata Farms and sold for $3275 to Paint Creek Cattle Co. of Chillicothe, Ohio. This two-year old bull, born 3/10/2006 was sired by CRA Bextor 872 5205 608. Seven breeds of cattle were represented in the sale. Bulls sold into Ohio and Wisconsin.

The first of two Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Seedstock Improvement Sales had a standing room only crowd at Union Stock Yards’ new sale facility in Hillsboro, Ohio, on April 14. Auctioneer Todd Woodruff sold 42 bulls, representing five breeds for an average sale price of $1,867. Both quality and demand were strong as the first 10 head sold in the sale averaged $2,595.

Lot 8, an Angus April 2006 son of GAR Focus 7681, consigned by Kiata Farms of Hamilton, topped the sale at $2,900 selling to Nick Oglesby of Ohio.
Twenty eight Angus bulls were sold for an average of $2,016. The second high selling Angus bull was lot 1, a Feb. 2005 son of Morgans Direction 111 9901, consigned by Kiata Farms that sold for $2,800 and sold to Steve Chrisman.
Two Limousin bulls sold for an average of $1,875. Double G Farms of West Alexandria consigned the top selling Limousin bull which was lot 33, a January 2006 son of EF Main Stay 541M that sold for $2,000 to Hardyman Limousin.
Seven Maine-Anjou bulls sold for an average of $1,593. The top selling Maine-Anjou bull was lot 3, a December 2005 son of OCC Legend 616L consigned by Pohlman Farms of Delphos that sold for $2,600 to Brock Brewster.
Four Simmental bulls averaged $1,413. Missing Rail Simmentals of Holgate consigned the high selling Simmental bull which was lot 42, a October 2005 son of STF Montana Black KF25 that sold for $1,650 to Bearcreek Cattle Company.
One Horned Herford Bull sold for $1,400. Grandview Herefords of Springfield consigned the April 2003 son of NS Instant Replay 910 that sold to Hilltop Farms.
07 Seedstock Improvement Sale held at Muskingum Livestock on May 4
The second Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Seedstock Improvement Sale was held May 4, 2007 at Muskingum Livestock, in Zanesville, Ohio. This was the first year OCA held a second seedstock sale and for it to be held at Muskingum Livestock. Auctioneer Ron Kreis sold 34 bulls, representing two breeds for an average sale price of $1,210.
The Seedstock Improvement Sale is open to consignments from all members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and all breeds of beef cattle. The sale offers an opportunity to market bulls from 1 to 5 years of age. Bulls were required to have current Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). Sale order was established using a four star evaluation system for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and maternal milk EPDs. Bulls were placed in order of total stars from the greatest to the least. Each bull that sold also passed a Breeding Soundness Exam prior to the sale.
